Microstructure and Nanoindentation Behavior of Ti40Zr40Ni20 Quasicrystal Alloy by Casting and Rapid Solidification

A Ti40Zr40Ni20 quasicrystal (QCs) rod and ribbons were prepared by conventional casting rapid solidification. The X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission (TEM) differential calorimeter (DSC) techniques used to investigate the microtissue, phase composition, solidification features of samples; nano-indentation test was carried out at room temperature. results show that a mixture α-Ti(Zr) icosahedral (I-phase) formed in rod; microstructure mainly consisted I-phase. mechanism I-phase different two alloys. quasicrystalline packet reaction while it generated directly from liquid. At temperature, both samples had relatively high hardness elastic modulus; modulus is 76 GPa, higher than 45 GPa rod. more twice
